Description
A 1557 portrait by Giovanni Battista Moroni depicting Lucrezia Agliardi Vertova, noted for its psychological realism and restrained, sober composition.
Giovanni Battista Moroni, a painter from the Bergamo region, produced this portrait of Lucrezia Agliardi Vertova in 1557. The work is a characteristic example of his approach to portraiture, which prioritised psychological observation and a restrained, naturalistic palette. Moroni was known for his ability to capture the specific character of his sitters, moving away from the idealised forms often found in the works of his contemporaries. Lucrezia is depicted in a sober, dark garment, her head covered by a simple white veil. She holds a small devotional book, a detail that suggests her piety and social standing. The composition is structured around a stone parapet, which features a trompe l'oeil inscription carved into a scroll. This Latin text identifies the sitter as the daughter of Alexis Alardi and the wife of Francesco Catanei Vertova, while also noting her role in the establishment of the church of Saint Anne in Albino. The inclusion of this inscription integrates the subject into the civic and religious history of her community. Moroni employs a muted colour scheme, dominated by greys, blacks, and whites. This choice directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's face and hands. The lighting is soft and even, avoiding dramatic contrasts to maintain a sense of quiet dignity. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the fabric textures and the weathered features of the subject. This portrait remains a clear record of sixteenth-century Italian provincial life, reflecting the values of the local nobility through a lens of understated realism. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
