A striking Symbolist work by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, depicting rhythmic lightning bolts reflecting over a dark, tranquil expanse of water.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian composer and painter, created this work during the final years of his life. His approach to visual art often mirrored his musical training, focusing on rhythm, structure, and the synthesis of different sensory experiences. This piece depicts a series of jagged lightning bolts descending from heavy, dark clouds towards a calm body of water. The reflection of the light on the surface of the water provides a symmetrical balance to the atmospheric tension above.
The composition is dominated by deep, nocturnal tones. The artist employs a limited palette of blues, greys, and blacks to convey the weight of the storm. The lightning itself is rendered with a stylised, almost geometric precision, which contrasts with the fluid, layered application of the tempera paint in the sky and water. This work belongs to a period where the artist moved away from literal representation, preferring instead to explore the emotional and spiritual resonance of natural phenomena.
Čiurlionis often organised his paintings into cycles, treating them like movements in a symphony. While this specific image functions as an independent study, it shares the dreamlike quality found in his larger series. The lack of human figures or terrestrial landmarks forces the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the elements. The stillness of the water, combined with the sudden, sharp energy of the lightning, creates a sense of suspended time. This print captures the texture of the original tempera, preserving the subtle variations in tone that define the artist's unique visual language.
