A Renaissance fresco by Luca Signorelli depicting a miracle from the life of Saint Benedict, showing monks attempting to move a stone.
This fresco is part of the cycle depicting the life of Saint Benedict, located within the cloister of the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. Luca Signorelli, a master of the Italian Renaissance, executed this work during the late fifteenth century. The scene illustrates a specific miracle where the saint commands the removal of a stone that has been rendered immovable by demonic influence.
The composition is divided into distinct narrative zones. In the foreground, a group of monks in light-coloured habits struggle to lift a heavy stone, while Saint Benedict stands to the left, gesturing with authority to dispel the unseen force. The figures demonstrate Signorelli's interest in anatomical structure and the physical weight of the human form, a hallmark of his approach to painting. The drapery of the monks' robes is rendered with clear, sculptural folds that define their movement and posture.
In the background, the scene expands into a wider view of the monastic environment. Other monks are depicted engaged in various tasks, including the extinguishing of a fire at a nearby building. The distant mountains and the architectural elements provide a sense of spatial depth, typical of the period's exploration of perspective. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and muted greens, which align with the fresco medium and the architectural setting of the cloister. The work reflects the narrative clarity required for monastic didactic art, presenting the miracle as a sequence of observable actions. Signorelli balances the supernatural subject matter with a grounded, humanistic depiction of the monks, focusing on their collective effort and the physical reality of their labour.
