Description
A striking Art Nouveau lithograph by Louis Rhead, featuring a woman in a patterned dress against a stylised floral background. This 1897 print captures the graphic elegance of the period.
This lithograph by Louis Rhead, titled Jane, appeared as part of the L'Estampe Moderne series in 1897. The portfolio was a monthly publication that commissioned original works from contemporary artists, providing a platform for the graphic arts during the height of the Art Nouveau period. Rhead, an American artist who spent much of his career in London and New York, was heavily influenced by the aesthetic principles of the Arts and Crafts movement and the bold, flat colour planes of Japanese woodblock prints. The composition features a woman in profile, her gaze directed towards the viewer. She wears a patterned cap and a green dress adorned with heart motifs. The background consists of a stylised floral pattern, which flattens the pictorial space and creates a decorative unity between the subject and her surroundings. Rhead employs strong, dark outlines to define the forms, a technique characteristic of his poster designs and book illustrations. The colour palette is restricted to muted greens, soft oranges, and cream tones, which work together to produce a balanced, harmonious visual effect. Unlike the more fluid, organic lines often associated with French Art Nouveau, Rhead’s work maintains a structured, graphic quality. The repetition of the floral motifs in the background provides a sense of rhythm, while the subject remains the clear focus of the piece. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise commercial graphic design with fine art sensibilities. It is a representative example of the late nineteenth-century interest in the decorative potential of the printed image, where the distinction between fine art and applied design became increasingly porous.
