Description
A delicate oil painting by Le Pho featuring a vase of arum lilies set against a sun-drenched, impressionistic garden scene.
Le Pho, a central figure in the development of modern Vietnamese painting, created this work during his time in France. The composition centres on a vase of arum lilies, or calla lilies, resting upon a white garden table. The white petals of the flowers contrast with the deep green foliage, while the background dissolves into a soft, golden-hued garden scene. Two figures appear in the distance, rendered with the light, impressionistic brushwork that characterises much of the artist's later output. The application of paint is fluid, creating a sense of atmosphere rather than precise detail. The palette is dominated by warm yellows and ochres, which suggest a sun-drenched afternoon. This approach to colour and light reflects the artist's synthesis of traditional Vietnamese sensibilities with the techniques of European modernism. Le Pho moved to Paris in 1937, where he remained for the rest of his life. His work often explores themes of domesticity, nature, and memory. In this piece, the arrangement of the lilies serves as a bridge between the immediate foreground and the ethereal, dreamlike quality of the garden beyond. The texture of the paint is visible, adding a tactile quality to the floral forms. The overall effect is one of quietude, capturing a fleeting moment of calm within a private, garden setting. The artist avoids rigid structure, preferring instead to allow the forms to merge through light and colour.
