A striking example of Flemish Expressionism, this portrait by Constant Permeke features monumental, simplified forms and an earthy, muted palette.
Constant Permeke, a central figure in the development of Flemish Expressionism, produced this portrait of Leonie during a period when his work focused on the raw, physical presence of his subjects. The painting displays the characteristic heavy, monumental forms that define his mature style. By reducing the human figure to simplified, almost sculptural volumes, Permeke shifts the focus from individual personality to a broader, more elemental representation of humanity.
The figure of Leonie is rendered with a deliberate lack of conventional grace. Her proportions are exaggerated, with large hands and feet that suggest a connection to manual labour and the earth. The palette is restricted to earthy, muted tones, which reinforces the sense of solidity and weight. Permeke uses dark, bold outlines to define the contours of the body, separating the figure from the neutral background. This technique flattens the pictorial space, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the physical mass of the subject.
Permeke often drew inspiration from the people of the Belgian coast, particularly fishermen and their families. In this work, the subject appears static and grounded. The expression is impassive, avoiding sentimentality or psychological narrative. Instead, the artist presents a study of form and texture, where the paint application itself contributes to the rugged quality of the image. The work reflects the artist's interest in the primitive and the authentic, stripping away decorative elements to reveal a stark, honest depiction of his subject. This approach aligns with the broader European interest in expressionist distortion during the early twentieth century, where artists sought to convey emotional truth through the manipulation of physical reality.
