A delicate Kacho-ga hanging scroll by Shibata Zeshin, featuring a bird perched near a rock with autumn-toned vines.
Shibata Zeshin, a master of both lacquerware and painting, produced this work in the Kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. The composition features a solitary bird perched upon a dark, craggy rock formation, while a delicate vine of autumn-tinted leaves hangs suspended in the upper left. The contrast between the solid, ink-washed rock and the fragile, crimson foliage demonstrates Zeshin's technical control over brushwork and negative space.
Zeshin was active during the transition from the Edo to the Meiji period, a time when Japanese art began to engage with new aesthetic influences while maintaining traditional techniques. His approach here is restrained. The bird is rendered with subtle grey and blue tones, providing a quiet counterpoint to the saturated red of the vine. The background remains largely empty, a characteristic choice that directs the viewer's attention to the specific interaction between the natural elements. The artist's signature and seal are visible in the lower right, confirming his authorship of this hanging scroll.
The work reflects a keen observation of nature, typical of Zeshin's output. He often utilised his experience with lacquer to inform his painting, resulting in works that possess a distinct sense of materiality and precision. The composition avoids clutter, allowing the viewer to appreciate the balance between the verticality of the vine and the mass of the rock. This print captures the original silk texture and the nuanced ink washes, preserving the atmospheric quality of the original painting. It is an example of the refined aesthetic sensibilities that defined Zeshin's career as a painter and artisan.
