A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas, depicting a genre scene of an elderly man in a tavern, after David Teniers the Younger.
This etching, titled Le Vieillard Content, demonstrates the technical precision of Jacques-Philippe Le Bas, a prolific French engraver of the eighteenth century. The composition is based on a painting by David Teniers the Younger, reflecting the period's interest in Dutch and Flemish genre painting. The scene depicts an elderly man seated in a rustic tavern, holding a jug, while a younger companion pours a drink. A small dog sits near the man's feet, adding a sense of domestic informality to the setting. Le Bas employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the clothing, the wooden furniture, and the dim interior space. The light source, coming from the left, creates a clear distinction between the figures and the shadowed background. The inclusion of a verse beneath the image provides a moralising commentary on the simple pleasures of life, a common trope in genre works of this era. The print captures the quiet, everyday atmosphere typical of Teniers's influence, translated into the refined medium of French engraving. As a master of the burin, Le Bas was instrumental in disseminating works from private collections to a wider public. This particular print was published in Paris, at his address on the Rue de la Harpe. The work remains a clear example of the eighteenth-century appetite for scenes of peasant life, rendered with a balance of observational detail and stylistic polish. The composition avoids excessive drama, focusing instead on the characterisation of the figures and the tactile quality of the tavern environment. It is a representative piece of the era's print culture, where the reproduction of earlier masters allowed for the circulation of artistic styles across European borders.
