Louis Jean Desprez, a French architect and painter known for his work in Sweden and Italy, produced this etching during his time in Rome. The work depicts a grotesque, three-headed creature, identified in the lower text as the African Tricephale. The composition draws upon the tradition of the fantastic and the monstrous, themes that often appeared in the margins of architectural studies or as independent caprices during the eighteenth century.

The creature is rendered with anatomical precision, blending skeletal structures with reptilian features. Its three heads display distinct expressions, while its wings and tail suggest a hybrid nature.
