A dramatic Dutch Golden Age painting by Gabriel Metsu, depicting the biblical parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man through light and shadow.
Gabriel Metsu, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, presents a moralising narrative in this depiction of the biblical parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man. The composition is divided between the opulent, elevated world of the wealthy man and the suffering of the beggar, Lazarus, who sits in the foreground. Metsu employs a dramatic use of light and shadow to guide the viewer through the scene, contrasting the dark, humble space occupied by Lazarus with the illuminated, festive interior where the rich man dines.
The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to render textures and human emotion with precision. Lazarus is shown in a state of physical decline, his posture reflecting his vulnerability. In contrast, the figures on the stairs and in the background exhibit a sense of detachment from the beggar's plight. A woman descends the steps, her gaze directed away from the suffering man, while a dog lingers nearby, adding a layer of naturalistic detail common in Dutch genre painting of the period.
Metsu was known for his versatility, moving between intimate genre scenes and larger, more complex compositions. This work reflects the influence of Rembrandt in its handling of chiaroscuro, yet it retains the clarity and refined brushwork characteristic of the Leiden school. The architectural elements, including the stone staircase and the arched opening, provide a sense of depth and structure to the narrative. By focusing on the stark social divide, the artist invites reflection on the themes of charity and indifference. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy browns, ochres, and deep shadows, ensures that the focus remains on the interaction, or lack thereof, between the two primary figures. This print captures the tonal range and atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, making it a study in seventeenth-century Dutch narrative art.
