The composition follows a traditional hierarchical structure, with Christ in Majesty positioned at the centre within a mandorla, surrounded by the heavenly host. Below this celestial realm, the scene divides into two distinct outcomes: the saved, who are guided towards the light, and the damned, who are consigned to the infernal regions on the right.

Giotto departs from the rigid, stylised conventions of Byzantine art, introducing a sense of human drama and physical presence. The figures possess weight and volume, their expressions conveying individualised emotion rather than symbolic abstraction. The lower section, depicting the torments of hell, demonstrates a departure from purely decorative religious art, as the artist engages with the visceral nature of the narrative. The inclusion of Enrico Scrovegni, the chapel's patron, who is shown offering a model of the building to the Virgin Mary, provides a specific historical context, linking the donor to the spiritual themes of the work.
