A precise engraving by Charles Clément Bervic depicting the classical Laocoön sculpture group, rendered with technical mastery and anatomical clarity.
This engraving by Charles Clément Bervic depicts the Laocoön and His Sons, a celebrated Hellenistic marble sculpture group. Bervic, a master of the burin, translates the dramatic tension of the original stone into a precise, monochromatic medium. The composition captures the Trojan priest and his two sons in their final struggle against the sea serpents sent by the gods.
Bervic employs a rigorous system of cross-hatching and parallel lines to model the musculature of the figures. The technique mimics the smooth, polished surface of marble, while the deep shadows within the alcove provide a sense of spatial depth. The artist focuses on the anatomical accuracy of the figures, reflecting the Neoclassical interest in the clarity and order of antiquity. Every muscle fibre and serpentine coil is rendered with technical discipline, demonstrating the high level of skill required for large-scale copperplate engraving during the early nineteenth century.
This print is a reproduction of the sculpture as it appeared in the Louvre, following its removal from Rome during the Napoleonic era. Bervic was a member of the Institut Impérial de France, and his work was often commissioned to document the treasures held within the national collections. The print maintains a formal, academic quality, prioritising the structural integrity of the figures over atmospheric effects. It provides a clear, detailed view of the sculpture, allowing for an examination of the composition from a fixed, frontal perspective. The work remains a technical reference for the capabilities of the burin in the hands of a skilled practitioner, capturing the pathos of the original subject through controlled, rhythmic lines.
