This Pointillist painting by Henri-Edmond Cross depicts a tranquil scene of goats resting in a sun-dappled landscape. The mosaic of colours creates a harmonious and luminous effect, characteristic of the Neo-Impressionist style.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, is recognised as a significant figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement. His artistic journey began with academic studies, but he later embraced the Pointillist technique, characterised by small, distinct dots of colour applied in patterns to form an image. This approach, influenced by Georges Seurat, aimed to achieve a greater degree of luminosity and colour interaction than traditional methods of blending pigments. Cross's work often depicted idyllic scenes of the Mediterranean coast, reflecting his move to the south of France in 1891. 'Landscape with Goats' exemplifies Cross's mature style. The canvas is filled with a mosaic of small, carefully placed dots of colour. Predominantly blues and greens create a cool, shaded foreground, while touches of yellow and orange suggest sunlight filtering through the trees. Goats are scattered throughout the scene, some reclining in the shade and others grazing in the distance. A building is visible in the background, adding a sense of human presence to the natural setting. The overall effect is one of tranquil harmony, capturing a moment of peaceful coexistence between animals and their environment.
