A rare etching by the Dutch innovator Hercules Segers, capturing a mountainous vista with a waterfall through delicate line work and atmospheric depth.
Hercules Segers remains a singular figure within the Dutch Golden Age. His approach to printmaking involved experimental techniques that pushed the boundaries of the etching medium. This work, Landscape with a Waterfall, First Version, demonstrates his interest in atmospheric depth and the manipulation of light across rugged terrain. Segers frequently printed on prepared fabrics or tinted papers, often adding hand-applied colour to individual impressions, which resulted in unique states for nearly every pull from his plates.
The composition presents a mountainous vista where a central waterfall descends into a valley. The artist employs fine, delicate lines to build the texture of the rock faces and the foliage. His use of drypoint allows for soft, velvety shadows that contrast with the lighter, etched areas of the sky and distant horizon. Unlike his contemporaries who sought clarity and precise detail, Segers favoured a more evocative, almost dreamlike quality in his depictions of the natural world. The scale of the mountains relative to the small, indistinct structures in the valley suggests a preoccupation with the vastness of nature.
Segers was an innovator who influenced later artists, including Rembrandt, who collected his prints. His technical curiosity led him to develop methods that anticipated modern printmaking practices. This particular etching reflects his ability to create a sense of immense space within a relatively small format. The viewer is invited to observe the subtle variations in line weight and the careful balance between the foreground crags and the receding distance. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that rewards close inspection of its technical execution and its moody, atmospheric rendering of a remote, mountainous environment.
