A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jean Morin, depicting a pastoral scene with a cowherd and his animals in a wooded rural setting.
Jean Morin, a French printmaker active in the seventeenth century, produced this etching during a period when the pastoral tradition gained significant traction in European art. The composition follows the conventions of the era, employing a structured arrangement of foreground, middle ground, and distance to guide the viewer through the scene. A large, gnarled tree dominates the right side, providing a heavy visual anchor that balances the dense foliage on the left.
In the foreground, a cowherd guides his animals near a small pool of water, a common motif in seventeenth-century pastoral imagery. The middle ground opens into a rolling terrain, where smaller figures are visible, adding a sense of scale and human activity to the rural setting. Morin utilises a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the bark, the foliage, and the undulating ground. The play of light and shadow is managed through these linear marks, creating a sense of volume without the need for colour.
This work reflects the influence of contemporary Dutch and Flemish printmaking, which Morin adapted to his own technical approach. The etching demonstrates a high degree of control over the copper plate, with fine lines used for the distant horizon and bolder, more decisive strokes for the foreground elements. The scene captures a quiet, rural moment, typical of the period's interest in the countryside as a subject for artistic exploration. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print preserves the fine details of Morin's original etching, offering a clear view of the technical skill involved in seventeenth-century print production.
