A study of a reclining figure by Romanian modernist Iosif Iser, featuring expressive impasto brushwork and a warm, earthy colour palette.
Iosif Iser, a significant figure in Romanian modernism, frequently explored the human form through a lens of expressive colour and textured application. This work depicts a reclining figure, captured with a focus on the interplay between light and shadow across the skin. The artist employs a palette dominated by earthy ochres, deep browns, and muted blues, which creates a sense of weight and physical presence. The composition is structured around the diagonal line of the figure, who rests with one arm raised behind the head. Iser uses thick, impasto brushwork to define the contours of the body, moving away from academic precision toward a more tactile representation. The background remains largely indistinct, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the posture and the tonal variations within the flesh tones. Iser spent time in Paris, where he engaged with the works of post-impressionist painters. This influence is visible in his approach to form, which prioritises the emotional resonance of the subject over strict anatomical accuracy. The painting reflects his interest in the simplified, monumental qualities of the human figure, a recurring theme throughout his career. By avoiding excessive detail, Iser invites an appreciation of the paint itself, as the surface is built up in layers that catch the light. This print captures the depth of the original oil application, preserving the character of the brushstrokes and the specific colour relationships that define Iser's approach to the nude. It is a study in balance, where the stillness of the pose contrasts with the energy of the paint application.
