A late fifteenth-century drypoint print by the Master of the Housebook, depicting a woman with a heraldic shield and an owl.
This drypoint print by the Meester van het Amsterdamse Kabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, captures the distinct stylistic qualities of late fifteenth-century German printmaking. The artist, active in the Upper Rhine region, is recognised for a fluid, sketch-like approach to the burin and drypoint needle, which departs from the rigid hatching techniques common to his contemporaries.
The composition features a female figure positioned behind a heraldic shield. The shield displays the letters A and N, flanked by decorative flourishes. To her left, a small owl perches atop a helmet, a motif that adds a layer of symbolic ambiguity to the scene. Above the figure, a blank scroll unfurls, providing a sense of movement and framing the upper portion of the print. The artist employs a delicate, calligraphic line quality, particularly in the rendering of the woman's hair and the swirling foliage surrounding the shield.
Drypoint was a relatively new medium during this period. The artist exploited the soft, velvety burr created by the needle to achieve tonal depth, a technique that distinguishes his work from the sharper, more linear engravings of the era. The figure's expression is gentle, and her attire reflects the fashion of the period, with soft folds of fabric rendered through rhythmic, parallel lines. This work provides insight into the secular interests of the late medieval period, where heraldry and symbolic animals were frequently integrated into personal iconography. The print remains a fine example of the technical experimentation occurring in German workshops during the final decades of the fifteenth century, demonstrating a transition toward more expressive and individualised graphic styles.
