Description
A 1913 portrait by Ilya Mashkov featuring a woman seated in a room filled with musical instruments and still life elements.
Ilya Mashkov, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, painted this work in 1913. The composition features a woman seated in a domestic interior, surrounded by objects that reflect the artist's interest in still life and texture. To her left stands a large double bass, while a piano occupies the right side of the frame. A basket of fruit sits atop the piano, and a landscape painting hangs on the wall behind the subject. Two large pumpkins are placed on the floor near the piano, adding a rustic element to the scene. Mashkov employs a bold, painterly approach. The surfaces of the objects, from the wood of the instrument to the fabric of the woman's dress, are rendered with visible brushwork and a tactile quality. The colour palette is grounded in earthy tones, with muted browns, ochres, and deep greens, punctuated by the lighter, textured wall surface. The perspective is slightly flattened, a characteristic of the artist's style during this period, which draws influence from both Post-Impressionism and Russian folk art traditions. The subject sits with a calm, composed posture, acting as a central anchor amidst the surrounding musical and decorative items. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate portraiture with the arrangement of inanimate objects, creating a cohesive environment that feels both staged and lived-in. The inclusion of the smaller painting within the painting adds a layer of visual complexity, inviting the viewer to consider the relationship between the primary subject and the depicted scene on the wall.
