A monochromatic graphic study of the iconic 'La Parisienne' fresco fragment from the Palace of Knossos, capturing the distinct style of Minoan portraiture.
This work is a graphic interpretation of the famous 'La Parisienne' fresco fragment, discovered by Sir Arthur Evans at the Palace of Knossos on Crete. The original Minoan artwork dates to the Late Minoan period, specifically the 14th century BC. It earned its nickname from the French workmen on the excavation site, who were struck by the figure's modern appearance, particularly her elaborate hairstyle and red lips, which reminded them of contemporary Parisian women. The illustration captures the profile of a woman, rendered with the characteristic Minoan emphasis on stylised features. Her large, almond-shaped eye, dark curls, and the sacred knot depicted at the back of her neck are hallmarks of the Knossos frescoes. The artist has utilised a monochromatic approach to focus on the linear qualities of the original painting, stripping away the colour to examine the composition and the specific aesthetic conventions of Bronze Age Aegean art. This print serves as a study of ancient Mediterranean iconography. It documents the visual language of a civilisation that predates the classical Greek period. The figure is presented in a manner that balances decorative art with portraiture, reflecting the courtly life of the Minoan elite. By isolating the figure from the larger architectural context of the palace walls, the artist allows the viewer to observe the specific details of the costume and the stylised representation of the human form. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of archaeology, the development of early European art, and the enduring fascination with the Aegean Bronze Age.
