An allegorical figure study by Dutch artist Pieter van den Berge, depicting the personification of hatred through delicate ink and watercolour.
This work by Pieter van den Berge, titled La Haine (Hatred), is an allegorical figure study executed in pen and ink with watercolour. The artist, active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, captures a personification of hatred through the posture and expression of a solitary female figure. She wears a wide-brimmed hat and a draped cloak, her gaze directed away from the viewer with a sense of disdain or cold detachment. The composition is framed by a simple border, typical of preparatory sketches or studies intended for print series or book illustrations.
The application of watercolour is restrained, using muted tones of green, pink, and earthy browns to define the form of the figure against a pale, atmospheric background. Van den Berge employs fine, calligraphic ink lines to delineate the folds of the clothing and the facial features, demonstrating a technical precision common to Dutch draughtsmen of the period. A faint, secondary sketch of a face appears to the right of the main figure, suggesting this sheet may have served as a working page or a collection of ideas for a larger allegorical project.
Allegorical representations of human emotions were a frequent subject in European art during this era, often used to convey moral or philosophical concepts in a visual format. The figure's stance, with one hand slightly extended, suggests a narrative quality, as if she is reacting to an unseen presence or event. The work provides insight into the methods of Dutch artists who balanced observation with symbolic invention. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, preserving the artist's original marks and colour choices. This print is a fine example of the period's interest in character studies and the personification of abstract concepts through human form.
