A satirical mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a monk and a nun in a cynical exchange regarding the nature of confession.
Jacob Gole, a Dutch engraver and publisher active in Amsterdam, produced this mezzotint as part of a series exploring satirical themes. The work depicts a nun and a monk in a close, conspiratorial exchange. The composition is circular, focusing on the exaggerated facial features of the figures: the monk possesses a prominent, hooked nose and a knowing grin, while the nun looks toward him with an expression of rapt attention. The technique of mezzotint allows for a soft, tonal quality, creating smooth transitions between the light and shadow across their faces and garments.
Below the circular image, the title 'La Confession' appears alongside a four-line French verse. The text offers a cynical commentary on the nature of the confessional, suggesting that the monk offers absolution for sins committed with friends, even implying a willingness to pardon acts before they occur. This type of social satire was common in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, often targeting the perceived hypocrisy of religious figures. Gole, who was known for his skill in mezzotint, utilised the medium to capture the subtle textures of the monk's hood and the nun's habit. The inclusion of the monogram 'MR' on the monk's vestments adds a specific, albeit ambiguous, detail to the scene. The print reflects the period's interest in moralising genre subjects, which often blended humour with social critique. By presenting the figures in a tight, intimate frame, Gole directs the viewer's attention to the interaction, inviting a reading of the scene that is both humorous and critical of the institutional power dynamics represented by the two figures.
