A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series, featuring the Sumida River and Azuma Bridge.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Komokata Hall and Azuma Bridge, a scene from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Hiroshige produced this collection during the final years of his career, capturing the changing atmosphere of the city through varied perspectives and meteorological conditions. The composition employs a high vantage point, looking out across the Sumida River toward the distant horizon.
A prominent red banner stands in the foreground, acting as a vertical anchor against the horizontal expanse of the water and the distant tree line. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, rendered with a subtle colour gradient that suggests the transition of light. A single bird is captured in flight, providing a sense of movement and scale within the quiet scene. The water is depicted with deep blue tones, reflecting the sky and the surrounding environment, while the architecture of the Komokata Hall is partially visible in the lower left corner.
Hiroshige utilised the woodblock medium to achieve precise lines and controlled colour application. The print demonstrates his ability to balance natural elements with human-made structures. The inclusion of the red banner introduces a sharp contrast to the cooler tones of the river and sky, drawing the eye across the composition. This work reflects the aesthetic conventions of the late Edo period, where artists often focused on specific locations to document the geography and daily life of the capital. The print remains a record of the visual character of Edo before the rapid modernisation of the Meiji era. It is a representative example of the technical skill involved in the production of ukiyo-e prints, from the initial drawing to the carving of the blocks and the final application of pigment.
