A character study by Pieter van den Berge depicting a figure in a state of agitation, rendered in pen, ink, and watercolour.
This work by Pieter van den Berge, titled Knaging (or Gnawing), captures a figure in a state of intense psychological distress. The Dutch artist, active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, employs a combination of pen, ink, and watercolour to define the subject. The figure is depicted with a hunched posture, one hand raised to the mouth in a gesture of biting or gnawing, which suggests internal turmoil or anxiety. The artist uses a muted palette, dominated by earthy browns, a mustard-yellow cloak, and distinctive pinkish-purple leggings, to ground the figure against a simple, pale background.
The composition is direct, focusing entirely on the expressive body language of the subject. Van den Berge uses thin, precise ink lines to outline the form and suggest the folds of the clothing, while the watercolour washes provide volume and tone. The figure's facial expression is sharp and angular, conveying a sense of agitation that is mirrored in the dishevelled hair. The work is signed with the artist's initials, P.V.D.B., in the lower left corner, a common practice for his smaller studies and illustrations.
This piece belongs to a broader tradition of character studies that were popular in the Netherlands during this period. Such works often explored human emotions or moral allegories through individual figures. The simplicity of the setting ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the psychological state of the subject. As a fine art print, this image offers a glimpse into the observational practices of Dutch artists who sought to document the nuances of human behaviour. The work is presented here with the clarity of the original medium, preserving the delicate ink work and the subtle application of colour that define van den Berge's approach to figurative drawing.
