A dramatic depiction of Act III from Shakespeare's tragedy, showing the king's descent into madness during a violent storm.
Benjamin West was an American-born painter who became the second president of the Royal Academy in London. This work depicts Act III, Scene IV of William Shakespeare's tragedy, King Lear. It was originally painted for the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery, a project intended to promote a national school of history painting in Britain. West produced several versions of this subject, including a large-scale canvas now held by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The composition focuses on the aged king during his descent into madness amidst a violent storm on the heath. Lear stands in the centre, his white hair and beard whipped by the wind. He tears at his white garments, a physical manifestation of his internal turmoil. To his left, the Earl of Kent attempts to shield him with a heavy red cloak. The Fool huddles nearby, while Edgar, disguised as the beggar Poor Tom, sits in the lower right corner. West employs a dramatic palette dominated by deep reds and slate greys. The lighting is theatrical, with a flash of lightning in the upper left illuminating the figures against the dark and chaotic background. The brushwork is energetic, capturing the movement of the wind and the textures of the heavy fabrics. This painting represents a shift from West's earlier, more rigid Neoclassical style toward the emotional intensity of the Romantic movement. The scene captures the moment Lear confronts the elements, famously declaring himself a man more sinned against than sinning. West uses the turbulent weather to mirror the psychological state of the protagonist. The arrangement of figures creates a sense of frantic motion, with limbs and drapery extending in multiple directions to suggest the force of the gale.
