De Jode, a prominent cartographer and publisher based in Antwerp, produced this work as part of a series illustrating the planetary influences on human life. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Doctrina et varias artes, aetate secunda, Mercurius pueris stella secunda parat', translates to the idea that Mercury prepares children for learning and the various arts during their second stage of life. The print serves as an example of the period's synthesis of classical mythology, astrology, and the humanist focus on education. The architectural setting, with its classical columns and arches, provides a structured environment for the intellectual activities depicted, reinforcing the orderly nature of the subjects being studied.
