A precise 1746 topographical drawing by Cornelis Pronk, depicting the Kasteel St.-Aldegonde in West-Souburg with ink and grey wash.
This drawing by Cornelis Pronk captures the Kasteel St.-Aldegonde in West-Souburg as it appeared in 1746. Pronk was a prolific Dutch draughtsman, known for his precise topographical records of buildings and estates throughout the Netherlands. His method typically involved travelling to a site to make sketches from life, which he would later refine into finished drawings using pen and ink, often augmented with subtle grey washes to suggest volume and atmospheric depth.
The composition focuses on the castle structure, which is surrounded by a moat and accessed via a small bridge. To the left, a horse-drawn carriage and several figures provide a sense of scale and daily activity. The architecture features a prominent tower with a distinctive spire and a domed pavilion at the water's edge. Pronk employs a delicate line quality, characteristic of his style, which prioritises clarity and accuracy over dramatic flair. The use of wash is restrained, serving to define the shadows on the building facades and the soft clouds in the sky.
Works of this nature were highly valued by contemporary collectors who took an interest in the history and appearance of Dutch country houses. Pronk's output is a significant resource for architectural historians, as many of the structures he documented have since been altered or demolished. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance technical precision with a calm, observational approach to his subject matter. The inclusion of the date and the artist's signature in the lower left corner confirms the provenance and the specific moment of its creation.
