A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicting a dramatic scene from the second act of the Kanadehon Chushingura kabuki play.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts a scene from the second act of the Kanadehon Chushingura, a famous narrative concerning the forty-seven ronin. Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunsho, became known for his depictions of kabuki actors, often focusing on their physical presence and dramatic gestures. This work captures a moment of tension within a domestic setting, where the architectural lines of the sliding doors and tatami flooring create a structured environment for the figures.
The composition employs a multi-layered perspective, common in ukiyo-e prints of the period. The foreground features a kneeling figure and a standing samurai, their postures conveying the social hierarchy and emotional weight of the narrative. To the right, women in patterned kimono observe the interaction, their expressions and positioning adding to the theatrical quality of the scene. In the upper background, a smaller, secondary scene is visible, providing context to the main action below.
Shun'ei uses a controlled palette, where the red of the kimono and the deep purple of the garments provide contrast against the neutral tones of the interior. The lines are precise, defining the folds of the clothing and the facial features of the actors with clarity. This print functions as a visual record of a theatrical performance, preserving the costumes, staging, and dramatic intensity of the kabuki stage for the contemporary audience of the Edo period. The work reflects the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e process, from the initial drawing to the carving of the woodblocks and the application of pigment to paper.
