A precise botanical study of Kaempferia longa by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, featuring detailed colour illustrations and analytical sketches from his Les Liliacées series.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often referred to as the Raphael of flowers, produced this study for his monumental work, Les Liliacées. Published in Paris between 1802 and 1816, the series documents a wide array of bulbous plants with scientific precision. Redouté utilised the technique of stipple engraving, a method that allows for subtle gradations of tone and colour, which perfectly captures the delicate textures of botanical specimens. This plate depicts Kaempferia longa, a member of the ginger family. The composition follows the standard format for Redouté's scientific plates, presenting the primary subject in full colour alongside smaller, monochromatic analytical sketches. These secondary drawings detail the reproductive parts of the plant, providing the viewer with a comprehensive understanding of its morphology. The central plant displays broad, deep green leaves with purple-tinged undersides, rising from a cluster of tuberous roots. The soft, pale petals of the flower provide a subtle contrast to the darker foliage. Redouté's work occupies a unique position between art and science. His ability to render the physical characteristics of a plant while maintaining a sense of aesthetic balance made him a favourite of the French aristocracy, including Empress Joséphine, who commissioned many of his works. This print offers a clear view of his method, where the focus remains on the structural integrity of the plant. The clean, white background ensures that the viewer's attention is directed entirely toward the botanical details, from the fine root systems to the specific venation of the leaves. It is an example of the high standard of natural history illustration during the early nineteenth century, reflecting the period's fascination with taxonomy and the classification of the natural world.
