Description
A 1992 digital collage by Richard Hamilton, updating his iconic 1956 exploration of domestic life, consumerism, and the digital age.
This work is a digital reimagining of Richard Hamilton's seminal 1956 collage of the same name. Created in 1992, the piece updates the original iconography to reflect the technological and social shifts of the late twentieth century. While the 1956 version examined the rise of consumer culture and domestic appliances, this later iteration incorporates elements such as computer hardware, satellite imagery, and contemporary media references. The composition maintains the domestic interior setting, yet the objects within have been replaced by modern equivalents. A microwave sits on the central table, replacing the tinned ham of the earlier version. The walls are textured with patterns resembling circuit boards, suggesting a shift from mechanical to digital domesticity. A prominent image of the planet Jupiter hangs from the ceiling, while a bodybuilder holding a stop sign occupies the right side of the frame. The inclusion of an 'AIDS' poster and a computer terminal at the desk introduces a more sombre, information-saturated reality compared to the optimistic consumerism of the post-war era. Hamilton, a central figure in the British Pop Art movement, used this series to critique the way mass media constructs our perception of the home. By layering disparate images, he forces the viewer to confront the artificiality of the domestic environment. The work functions as a visual record of how the definition of the modern home changed over four decades. It remains a precise observation of the intersection between private life and public imagery, rendered with the sharp, detached aesthetic characteristic of Hamilton's practice.
