A classic American Regionalist work by Thomas Hart Benton, depicting labourers in a golden wheat field with his signature sculptural, rhythmic style.
Thomas Hart Benton, a central figure in the American Regionalist movement, produced July Hay in 1943. The work depicts two labourers harvesting wheat in a sun-drenched field, framed by the gnarled, sculptural form of a foreground tree. Benton employs a distinctive, rhythmic approach to form, where the rolling hills and the musculature of the figures are rendered with a sense of physical weight and volume. His technique, which often involved building up layers of egg tempera followed by oil glazes, results in a surface that feels tactile and dense.
The composition is structured to draw the eye from the immediate, detailed foreground of wildflowers and rock formations into the expansive, golden field beyond. The figures, captured in the act of manual labour, are integrated into the environment, reflecting Benton's interest in the relationship between the American worker and the land. The sky, painted in shades of blue and soft clouds, provides a contrast to the warm, amber tones of the wheat. This work is characteristic of Benton's mature style, which rejected the abstraction popular in European art circles at the time in favour of a representational, narrative approach to American life. The exaggerated, almost fluid contours of the tree trunk and the undulating terrain are hallmarks of his visual language, designed to create a sense of movement and energy within the frame. By focusing on the seasonal rhythms of rural life, Benton provides a view of the mid-twentieth-century American Midwest that is both stylistically stylised and grounded in the realities of agricultural labour.
