A haunting illustration by John Bauer, depicting a mysterious hooded figure and a small, fur-clad character in a dark, atmospheric setting.
John Bauer remains a central figure in Swedish illustration, particularly for his contributions to the annual publication Bland tomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls). This work, Julbocken, demonstrates his mastery of atmosphere and narrative tension. Bauer often drew from the folklore of the deep Swedish forests, creating scenes that feel both grounded in reality and touched by the supernatural.
The composition features a stark contrast between the two figures. On the left, a small, seated character in ornate, fur-trimmed attire looks upward. Opposite stands a tall, hooded figure draped in heavy, muted grey robes, clutching two sacks. The background is a void of deep, dark tones, which forces the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the two subjects. Bauer uses a precise, calligraphic line to define the folds of the clothing and the textures of the fur, while his use of watercolour allows for subtle gradients within the shadows.
Bauer was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and the Italian Renaissance, yet he developed a distinct visual language that is undeniably Nordic. His ability to convey a sense of mystery through minimal staging is evident here. The hooded figure, often associated with the traditional Christmas goat or gift-bringer in Scandinavian folklore, possesses a solemn, almost otherworldly quality. The work avoids excessive detail, preferring to let the silhouettes and the weight of the figures communicate the narrative. This print captures the quiet, eerie beauty that defined Bauer's career, offering a glimpse into the mythic world he constructed for generations of readers. It is a fine example of his technical skill with ink and wash, showing how he balanced decorative elements with a sombre, evocative mood.
