A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicting the biblical story of Jonah, showcasing the technical precision of Flemish printmaking.
This hand-coloured engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts the biblical narrative of Jonah attempting to flee his divine commission. Wierix, a member of a prolific family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Flemish school during the late sixteenth century. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the foreground features Jonah in a dramatic, contorted pose, while the background presents a bustling harbour scene with ships and architectural structures that reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the period.
The artist employs a clear, linear style to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides context for the scene, identifying the subject as Jonah being sent to Nineveh. The hand-applied colour adds a layer of visual interest, distinguishing the figures from the muted tones of the coastal landscape. Wierix was known for his ability to translate complex theological narratives into accessible visual formats, often working on small-scale prints intended for devotional books or private collections.
The architectural elements, including the domed structure on the left and the fortified buildings near the water, suggest a blend of classical influence and contemporary European construction. The figure of Jonah, with his expressive gesture and flowing garments, occupies the primary space, drawing the viewer into the narrative tension of the scene. This work represents the meticulous craftsmanship associated with the Wierix workshop, where high-quality copperplate engravings were produced for a wide audience. The print remains a fine example of how biblical stories were interpreted and disseminated through the medium of printmaking in the Low Countries, combining narrative clarity with the decorative qualities of the era.
