A refined seventeenth-century portrait etching of Jacques Tuboeuf by French printmaker Jean Morin, based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne.
This portrait of Jacques Tuboeuf, Comptroller of Finances, is a fine example of the printmaking output of Jean Morin. Active in Paris during the seventeenth century, Morin gained recognition for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of contemporary oil portraits into the medium of etching and engraving. This work is based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne, a collaborator with whom Morin frequently worked to reproduce the likenesses of prominent French officials and intellectuals.
The composition features Tuboeuf within an octagonal frame, a device that provides a sense of architectural structure to the print. The surrounding text, integrated into the border, identifies the sitter and his official titles. Morin employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the sitter's features and the texture of his clothing. The light source is directed from the upper left, creating subtle shadows that define the contours of the face and the folds of the collar. This technique allows for a nuanced representation of volume and depth, characteristic of the French school of portraiture during the mid-seventeenth century.
Morin's approach to the medium often involved a combination of etching for the initial lines and engraving for the refinement of tone. This hybrid method allowed him to achieve a softness in the skin tones while maintaining precision in the details of the costume. The result is a balanced image that captures the gravity and status of the subject. The print reflects the formal conventions of the period, where the sitter is presented with a direct gaze, conveying a sense of authority and intellectual composure. As a historical document, the work provides insight into the visual culture of the French administration under the reign of Louis XIII and the early years of Louis XIV.
