A detailed 1658 portrait engraving by Robert Nanteuil, depicting the French military commander Jacques, Marquis de Castelnau.
This engraving by Robert Nanteuil depicts Jacques, Marquis de Castelnau, a figure of military authority in seventeenth-century France. Nanteuil, a master of the portrait print, utilised a refined technique of cross-hatching and stippling to render the textures of the subject's armour, the soft curls of his wig, and the delicate fabric of his cravat. The composition follows the conventions of the period, presenting the sitter within a trompe-l'oeil oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.
The inclusion of a coat of arms at the base of the frame, combined with the detailed inscription, identifies the sitter's titles and roles, including his position as Lieutenant General of the King's armies in Flanders and Governor of Brest. Nanteuil was known for his ability to capture the likeness of the French aristocracy, often working from life, as indicated by the inscription 'Nanteuil ad viv. faciebat' (Nanteuil made this from life).
The precision of the line work demonstrates the technical rigour required for high-quality engraving during the reign of Louis XIV. The play of light across the metallic surface of the breastplate provides a contrast to the shadow within the oval, creating a sense of volume and presence. This print is a representative example of the portraiture that defined the visual culture of the French court, where the status of the individual was communicated through specific heraldic and sartorial markers. The work remains a clear record of the aesthetic standards and social hierarchies of the era.
