A detailed seventeenth-century portrait engraving of Jacques de Cachiopin, produced by Lucas Vorsterman I after a painting by Anthony van Dyck.
This portrait of Jacques de Cachiopin is a fine example of the collaborative printmaking culture in seventeenth-century Antwerp. Lucas Vorsterman I, a master engraver who worked closely with Anthony van Dyck, produced this plate as part of the Iconography series. This ambitious project aimed to document the faces of contemporary artists, scholars, and patrons through high-quality portrait prints.
Vorsterman employs a sophisticated combination of etching and engraving to capture the textures of the sitter's attire. The ruff collar, with its precise folds, contrasts against the softer, shadowed fabric of the doublet. The artist uses varied line weights to define the contours of the face and the fall of light across the subject, creating a sense of volume and presence. The background is rendered with fine, horizontal hatching, which pushes the figure forward and focuses the viewer on the sitter's expression.
Jacques de Cachiopin is identified in the lower margin as an 'amator artis pictoriae' or lover of the art of painting. This designation reflects the social standing of the sitter as a patron or collector rather than a professional artist. The inclusion of the Latin inscription and the credit to Van Dyck as the painter (pinxit) and Vorsterman as the engraver (sculpsit) follows the standard conventions of the era, providing a clear record of the work's origin. The print demonstrates the technical rigour required to translate the painterly qualities of a portrait into the monochromatic medium of ink on paper. It remains a clear record of the aesthetic values and social hierarchies present in the Flemish Baroque period, capturing the dignity and poise expected of a gentleman of the time.
