A fine art print of Giotto's allegorical figure of Inconstancy, a monochrome fresco from the Scrovegni Chapel depicting the instability of human character.
This figure of Inconstancy is part of the extensive cycle of frescoes painted by Giotto in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The work depicts one of the seven Vices, positioned as a monochrome grisaille painting on the lower register of the chapel walls. Giotto uses this technique to simulate the appearance of marble sculpture, creating a sense of physical weight and three-dimensional presence that was revolutionary for the early fourteenth century.
The figure is shown balanced precariously upon a wheel, a visual metaphor for the shifting and unstable nature of human character. Her body is caught in a state of motion, with her drapery falling in soft, naturalistic folds that follow the contours of her form. The wheel beneath her feet suggests the turning of fortune, a common theme in medieval moral philosophy. Her gaze is directed upwards, away from the viewer, while her arms are outstretched to maintain her balance on the unstable sphere.
Giotto departs from the rigid, stylised forms of the Byzantine tradition, opting instead for a humanistic approach that prioritises volume and emotional clarity. The monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus entirely on the sculptural quality of the figure and the precision of the artist's brushwork. By treating the wall surface as a space for architectural illusion, Giotto invites the viewer to engage with the moral narrative of the chapel through tangible, lifelike forms. This print captures the subtle gradations of light and shadow that define the figure, preserving the texture of the original plaster surface and the clarity of Giotto's composition.
