A nineteenth-century albumen print by George Washington Wilson, depicting a stream in the Trossachs, Scotland, originally published as an illustration for Sir Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake.
This albumen print by George Washington Wilson captures a stream flowing through the wooded terrain of the Trossachs, a region in the Scottish Highlands. Wilson, a pioneer in Scottish photography, gained recognition for his technical precision and his ability to document the rugged beauty of the British Isles. This specific image was produced as an illustration for an edition of Sir Walter Scott's poem, The Lady of the Lake, which popularised the Trossachs as a destination for travellers and artists alike.
The composition focuses on the interplay between the water and the surrounding vegetation. Wilson utilises the long exposure capabilities of the wet collodion process to render the stream with a soft, blurred quality, contrasting with the sharp detail of the rocks and foliage. The dense canopy of trees creates a natural frame, drawing the eye toward the centre of the image where the water cascades over stones. The inclusion of this photograph within a literary volume reflects the Victorian practice of combining poetry with visual documentation to evoke a sense of place.
As a commercial photographer, Wilson operated a successful studio in Aberdeen. His work often involved the production of stereoscopic views and larger prints for the tourist market. This piece demonstrates his command of light and shadow, particularly in the way he balances the bright highlights on the water against the darker, shaded areas of the forest floor. The print retains the sepia tones characteristic of the albumen process, providing a warm, historical quality to the scene. It serves as a record of the Scottish wilderness as it appeared in the late nineteenth century, documenting the specific geography that inspired Scott's romantic verse.
