Description
A foggy Victorian street scene in London by Swedish artist Anders Zorn. This 1890 watercolour captures a horse-drawn omnibus and pedestrians through a thick urban mist.
Anders Zorn painted this scene during his stay in London in 1890. The work captures the atmospheric quality of a Victorian street under a heavy fog. Zorn used a limited palette of greys and browns with ochre tones to depict the damp, overcast environment typical of the city at the time. The composition features a horse-drawn omnibus on the right side. A visible advertisement for Pears Soap appears on the side of the vehicle, which was a common sight in late nineteenth-century London. A woman stands near a tall gas lamp in the middle ground, her figure rendered with quick, fluid strokes. To the left, a horse and carriage emerge from the mist, while gold lettering on a building facade suggests a commercial shopfront. Zorn was primarily known for his oil portraits and etchings, but his watercolours from this period demonstrate a mastery of light and atmosphere. He avoided precise details in favour of capturing the immediate sensation of the urban environment. The wet pavement reflects the dull light, creating a sense of movement and moisture. This piece is part of a series where Zorn explored the visual effects of the London fogs.

Artist Biography
Anders Zorn
He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.
He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
