A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Theodoor Galle depicting the mystical visions of Saint Ignatius of Loyola during prayer and the Mass.
This engraving by Theodoor Galle depicts three distinct spiritual experiences of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The composition is organised into a tripartite narrative, a common technique in Counter-Reformation art to convey complex theological concepts within a single frame. The work is part of a series documenting the life and mystical encounters of the founder of the Jesuit order.
In the foreground, the artist employs a clear, linear style characteristic of early seventeenth-century Flemish printmaking. The central figure of Ignatius is shown kneeling in prayer, his gaze directed upward toward a celestial manifestation of the Holy Trinity. To the right, a priest elevates the host during the Mass, an act that triggers a vision of Christ for the saint. On the left, a smaller vignette shows Ignatius writing, illustrating his intellectual contribution to the order. The use of light is deliberate, with rays emanating from the divine figures to connect the heavenly realm with the earthly participants. The architectural setting provides a structured, classical backdrop that anchors the supernatural events in a recognisable space.
Galle, a member of a prominent Antwerp family of engravers and publishers, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of shadow and texture, particularly in the drapery of the ecclesiastical vestments. The Latin inscriptions at the base of the print serve as a guide for the viewer, identifying each scene as a specific moment from the saint's spiritual journey. This print reflects the didactic nature of religious art during this period, intended to inspire devotion and provide visual support for the teachings of the Jesuit order.
