A 1920 oil painting by John French Sloan depicting the rocky, sun-dappled terrain of Gloucester, Massachusetts, with a focus on light and texture.
Humoresque, painted by John French Sloan in 1920, captures the rocky terrain of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Sloan, a member of the Ashcan School, often moved away from his urban subjects during the summer months to explore the coastal geography of New England. This work demonstrates his shift toward a more experimental use of colour and brushwork during this period.
The composition features large, undulating rock formations that dominate the foreground. Sloan uses a palette of lavender, violet, and cool blue to define the shadows and contours of the stone, contrasting these with the earthy greens and yellows of the surrounding vegetation. Small figures are scattered across the middle ground, some appearing to be artists at work with their easels, which suggests a self-referential observation of the creative process within the natural environment.
Sloan applies paint with visible, rhythmic strokes. The texture of the canvas remains apparent, contributing to the tactile quality of the rocky surface. Unlike his earlier, darker depictions of New York City life, this piece reflects a lighter, more observational approach to light and form. The sky is rendered in soft, muted tones, providing a calm backdrop to the active, textured ground. The work avoids rigid realism, opting instead for a personal interpretation of the coastal environment. It remains a clear example of how Sloan adapted his observational skills to the open air, focusing on the interplay of light across uneven surfaces rather than precise topographical accuracy. The title itself, Humoresque, hints at a playful or whimsical mood, perhaps reflecting the artist's own enjoyment of his time spent painting in the open air away from the pressures of city life.
