A refined seventeenth-century portrait engraving of the sculptor Hubert van den Eynden, executed by Lucas Vorsterman I after a design by Anthony van Dyck.
This portrait of the sculptor Hubert van den Eynden is a fine example of the collaborative printmaking culture in seventeenth-century Antwerp. The work is part of the Iconography, a series of portraits of famous contemporaries initiated by Anthony van Dyck. Lucas Vorsterman I, a master engraver, translated Van Dyck's original painted composition into this precise graphic medium.
Vorsterman demonstrates his technical command through the varied application of line. The sitter is depicted in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed away from the viewer. The artist employs dense cross-hatching to define the shadows of the doublet and the folds of the cloak, while lighter, more delicate strokes model the facial features and the lace collar. The inclusion of the sculptor's name at the base follows the conventions of the Iconography, identifying the subject clearly for the viewer.
Van Dyck's influence is visible in the sitter's relaxed posture and the psychological depth conveyed through the expression. Vorsterman captures the texture of the fabric and the softness of the hair with remarkable clarity. The background remains neutral, ensuring the focus stays on the figure. This print reflects the high standards of the Flemish school of engraving, where the interplay between painterly design and linear execution reached a peak of refinement. The work offers a glimpse into the social and professional circles of the period, documenting the appearance of a notable artist through the skilled hand of a contemporary printmaker.
