A geometric lithograph by Bauhaus master Johannes Itten, exploring architectural form through stark, cubic volumes and monochromatic contrast.
Johannes Itten, a central figure in the early years of the Bauhaus, produced this lithograph during his tenure at the school in Weimar. The work reflects the pedagogical focus on geometric reduction and the analysis of form that defined his preliminary course. The composition presents a stark, cubic structure, rendered with a focus on volume and spatial relationships rather than decorative detail. The building is depicted from an elevated perspective, allowing the viewer to observe the interplay of light and shadow across its flat, planar surfaces. Itten employs a monochromatic palette to emphasise the structural logic of the design. The surrounding environment is suggested through simple, hatched lines, which contrast with the solid, dark voids of the windows and doorways. This approach strips the architecture of extraneous ornamentation, aligning with the modernist pursuit of functional clarity. Itten was deeply interested in the psychological impact of form and contrast. In this piece, the rigid geometry of the house is balanced by the organic, textured representation of the grass and trees. The work functions as a visual exercise in balance, demonstrating the principles of contrast that Itten codified in his colour and form theories. By isolating the structure within a simplified field, he directs attention to the proportions and the rhythmic arrangement of the building blocks. This print offers a clear view into the experimental atmosphere of the early Bauhaus, where the boundaries between fine art and architectural design were frequently re-examined.
