A seminal Futurist portrait by Umberto Boccioni, merging the human figure with its architectural surroundings through fragmented planes and divisionist brushwork.
Horizontal Volumes, also known as the portrait of the artist's mother, represents a significant moment in the development of Italian Futurism. Painted in 1912, the work demonstrates Boccioni's attempt to merge the human figure with its surrounding environment through the use of fragmented planes and intersecting lines. The subject, the artist's mother, sits with her hands clasped, yet her form is not static. Instead, she is integrated into the architectural geometry of the room, suggesting a continuous interaction between the person and the space they occupy.
Boccioni employs a technique of divisionism, where small, distinct strokes of colour are placed side by side to create a sense of movement and light. The palette consists of cool blues, greys, and earthy tones, which contrast with the warmer, more saturated hues used to define the face and hands. This approach allows the artist to break down the traditional boundaries of portraiture, moving away from a singular, fixed perspective. The background is composed of sharp, angular shapes that imply the presence of buildings or interior structures, reinforcing the Futurist interest in the dynamism of modern life.
By dissolving the solid mass of the figure into a series of overlapping planes, Boccioni captures a sense of temporal flux. The painting does not merely record a likeness, but rather the sensation of a figure existing within a shifting, energetic field. This work remains a primary example of how the Futurist movement sought to represent the speed and complexity of the early twentieth century through the lens of traditional subjects.
