A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Romeyn de Hooghe, featuring dual panels that illustrate scenes from Persian court life and Mexican cultural practices.
This etching by Romeyn de Hooghe presents a dual-panel composition, typical of the didactic and encyclopaedic illustrations produced in the late seventeenth century. The work functions as a visual record, documenting disparate cultural narratives through a structured, multi-part layout. The left panel, titled 'Historie van een rijksbediende in Perzië', depicts a formal audience within a Persian court. The scene is populated by figures in elaborate robes, with a kneeling official presenting himself before a seated monarch. The architectural setting features high, vaulted ceilings and decorative floor patterns, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of De Hooghe's technical skill.
The right panel, 'Tijd bij de Mexicanen', shifts the focus to a different geographical and cultural context. It shows a scene of artistic production and ritual, featuring figures engaged with large, circular calendar-like structures and feathered adornments. In the background, a distant fortress or palace sits atop a hill, connected by an elevated bridge. Both panels are accompanied by numbered keys, which provide specific identifications for the figures and objects depicted, such as the 'Roi de Perse' or the 'Peintre a plumes'.
Romeyn de Hooghe was a prolific Dutch artist, known for his contributions to political pamphlets, maps, and book illustrations. His work often reflects the European fascination with global exploration and the systematic classification of foreign customs. The print displays a high density of information, balancing narrative detail with a clear, grid-like organisation. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of depth within the architectural spaces, while the inclusion of text blocks integrates the image into a broader literary or historical volume. This piece offers a glimpse into the seventeenth-century European perspective on non-Western cultures, presented through the lens of meticulous printmaking.
