A precise 1861 graphite study by Cornelis Springer documenting the historic town hall and Grote Kerk in Hasselt, Netherlands.
This graphite study by Cornelis Springer captures the architectural character of Hasselt, a town in the Overijssel province of the Netherlands. Dated 4 October 1861, the drawing documents the town hall and the Grote Kerk, two structures that define the historic centre of the municipality. Springer, a painter known for his meticulous attention to Dutch urban topography, utilised this sketch as a preparatory record for his later oil paintings.
The composition relies on precise, thin graphite lines to map the geometry of the buildings. Springer focuses on the stepped gables of the town hall and the verticality of the church tower, providing a clear sense of scale and spatial arrangement. The surrounding trees are rendered with minimal, gestural strokes, allowing the architecture to remain the primary subject. The drawing reflects the artist's methodical approach to his craft, where on-site observations were recorded with accuracy before being translated into more finished works in the studio.
As a document of nineteenth-century Dutch urbanism, this work offers a glimpse into the methods of a painter who was deeply engaged with the preservation of historical townscapes. The lack of heavy shading or tonal variation emphasises the structural integrity of the buildings. It provides a clear view of the architectural details that Springer would eventually refine with colour and light. This print preserves the raw, immediate quality of the original graphite marks, offering a direct connection to the artist's process. It is an appropriate choice for those interested in architectural history, the development of Dutch townscapes, or the technical discipline of nineteenth-century drawing.
