A delicate pastel portrait by the Venetian master Rosalba Carriera, capturing a woman in armour with soft, atmospheric light.
Rosalba Carriera was a central figure in the development of pastel as a primary medium for portraiture during the eighteenth century. Her work, such as this study of a woman identified as Beatrice, demonstrates the technical facility that made her one of the most sought-after artists in Europe. Working in Venice, Carriera moved away from the heavy oil techniques of the period, favouring the soft, atmospheric qualities of pastel to capture the nuances of skin tone and light.
In this portrait, the subject is depicted with a gaze directed upwards, a common trope in the period to suggest contemplation or spiritual devotion. The sitter wears a breastplate, a stylistic choice that adds a sense of theatricality to the composition. Carriera uses a delicate application of pigment to render the texture of the hair and the reflective surface of the metal armour. The background remains dark and indistinct, which serves to draw the viewer's attention to the illuminated features of the face. Her ability to blend colours directly on the paper allowed for a fluidity that oil paint could rarely replicate at the time.
Carriera's influence extended across the continent, particularly in Paris, where her visits helped popularise the use of pastel among the French aristocracy. This specific work reflects the Rococo preference for grace, lightness, and emotional subtlety. By avoiding harsh outlines, she achieved a lifelike quality that feels immediate and personal. The soft transitions between shadow and light across the subject's neck and cheeks demonstrate her mastery of the medium. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the specific layering of the pastel strokes, allowing for a close examination of her technique.
