A modernist depiction of Hawaiian life by Arman Manookian, featuring bold silhouettes and a soft, non-naturalistic colour palette.
Arman Manookian, an artist of Armenian descent who relocated to Hawaii in the 1920s, developed a distinct visual language that merged modernist simplification with the specific light and atmosphere of the Pacific. In this work, the composition is structured through bold, flattened forms and a deliberate use of contour lines that define both the human figures and the sails of the outrigger canoes. The scene depicts a gathering on the shore, where the figures are rendered with a focus on silhouette and mass rather than anatomical detail.
The colour palette is characteristic of Manookian's approach, utilising soft, non-naturalistic tones for the sky and clouds, which contrast with the warmer, earthier hues of the figures and the foreground. The sky, dominated by large, cloud-like shapes, provides a backdrop that feels both expansive and decorative. By reducing the visual information to essential shapes, the artist creates a sense of stillness and rhythm. The sails of the canoes act as vertical elements that break the horizontal orientation of the beach and sea, guiding the viewer's eye across the canvas.
Manookian's work from this period reflects a broader interest among artists of the time in documenting Hawaiian life through a modernist lens. His approach avoids the sentimental tropes often found in contemporary depictions of the islands. Instead, he focuses on the interplay of light, shadow, and geometric form. The result is a composition that feels balanced and intentional, capturing a moment of quiet activity. This print offers a clear view of the artist's technique, showing how he used paint to build up areas of colour within defined boundaries, creating a surface that is both graphic and painterly.
