A 1928 modernist oil painting by Arman Manookian, featuring the rolling hills and distinct flora of Hawaii rendered in bold, rhythmic forms.
Arman Manookian, an artist of Armenian descent who settled in Hawaii, produced this work in 1928. His approach to the Hawaiian environment departs from the traditional, romanticised depictions common during the early twentieth century. Instead, he employs a modernist vocabulary, characterised by simplified forms and a deliberate, non-naturalistic colour palette.
The composition features a series of rolling hills and tall, columnar trees that dominate the foreground. Manookian uses bold, dark outlines to define these shapes, creating a sense of structure that borders on the graphic. The sky is rendered in segmented, cloud-like forms, echoing the rhythmic curves of the terrain below. His use of blue, green, and muted earth tones creates a cohesive, cool-toned atmosphere that feels both stylised and grounded.
Manookian's training at the Rhode Island School of Design is evident in his disciplined handling of space and line. He avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the essential geometry of the terrain. This work reflects the broader interest in regionalism that emerged in American art during the interwar period, where artists sought to define the character of specific locales through a personal, often experimental, lens. The painting remains a distinct example of how Manookian synthesised his formal education with the unique visual stimuli of the Pacific islands. His career was brief, yet his output during his time in Honolulu provides a unique perspective on the intersection of modernism and regional subject matter.
