A classic Yuan Dynasty handscroll by Zhao Mengfu, depicting grooms and horses with precise ink work and a focus on structural clarity.
Zhao Mengfu, a scholar-official during the Yuan Dynasty, produced this handscroll as a study of equine form and human character. The work displays his mastery of the brush, utilising controlled, fluid lines to define the musculature of the horses and the folds of the grooms' robes. Zhao was known for his revival of Tang Dynasty styles, rejecting the more decorative approaches of the preceding Southern Song period in favour of a return to classical simplicity and structural clarity.
The composition is sparse, focusing on the interaction between the figures and their charges. The horses are rendered with a sense of volume and weight, their forms balanced by the upright, static posture of the grooms. The ink work is precise, with subtle washes providing depth to the figures without relying on heavy shading. The inclusion of calligraphy and numerous red collector seals across the surface provides a record of the scroll's history, documenting its passage through various imperial and private collections over the centuries.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the horse as a symbol of the virtuous official, a common theme in Chinese literati painting. The restraint in the palette, dominated by ink tones and muted washes, directs attention to the quality of the line and the rhythmic spacing of the figures across the horizontal format. It is a representative example of the literati tradition, where technical skill serves the expression of intellectual and moral ideals. The work remains a primary reference for the study of Yuan Dynasty figure painting and the development of the scholar-painter aesthetic.
