Description
A monochrome portrait of John Page, Governor of Virginia, painted by Benjamin West in 1795. The portrait shows Page at Rosewell Plantation, with a rifle, reflecting his connection to the land.
This portrait depicts John Page (1743-1808), who served as the Governor of Virginia from 1802 to 1805. Painted by Benjamin West (1738-1820), an American-born artist who spent most of his career in England, the work captures Page in a relaxed pose, seated outdoors with a rifle resting against his arm. The setting appears to be Rosewell Plantation in Gloucester County, Virginia, Page's family home. The image is rendered in monochrome, with fine lines defining the details of Page's clothing, the surrounding foliage, and his facial features. West was a prominent figure in the art world of his time, known for his history paintings and portraits. He served as the second president of the Royal Academy in London. His style blended neoclassical elements with a developing sense of romanticism. This portrait exemplifies his ability to capture the likeness and character of his sitters, while also providing a glimpse into the life and surroundings of an American statesman in the late 18th century. The inclusion of the rifle and the outdoor setting suggest Page's connection to the land and his role in the developing American society.

Artist Biography
Benjamin West
He was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, in 1738, a Quaker-raised boy from the colonies who became the second president of the Royal Academy in London, holding the post for twenty-eight years. He arrived in England in 1763 after studying in Italy and quickly gained the patronage of George III, serving as the king's historical painter from 1772 to 1801.
He trained a generation of American painters in London, including Gilbert Stuart, Charles Willson Peale, Samuel Morse and John Trumbull. Each returned to America and shaped the new nation's visual culture. West stayed in London and died there in 1820, at eighty-one.
